International Ballast Water Management Convention – 8 September 2017, MEPC 71 reached a highly anticipated compromise agreement on the implementation dates for the so-called D-2 discharge standard. Estimates from industry sources suggest that between 2019-2024 around 40,000 ships will have to install new ballast water treatment systems to continue trading at an estimated cost to the industry of maybe $80 billion.
