Overview

The Structural Engineer’s primary responsibility will be all structural calculations and design, including construction drawings, class submission documentation, material specification, and construction support from the proposal phase though delivery. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, the responsibilities include designing structural foundations, offshore structures, lifts, blocking plans (specifications and deliverable CAD drawings), validation of structural models, preparing build strategy, and conducting checks. Position also requires open minded collaborative skills to work with other engineering discipline Project Engineers/Lead Designers in a professional environment.

  • Initiate, understand, supervise, distribute and oversee structural analysis, development, appraisal and modification of ship and marine structures.
  • Solve technical issues under the guidance of the department supervision.
  • Plan, estimate, schedule and monitor the assigned work.
  • Track and report progress.
  • Oversee the work status of assigned resources.
  • Facilitate communications towards identifying solutions.
  • Prepare, check and issue professional quality deliverables
  • Interpret contract requirements
  • Develop contract change documents to support the project needs
  • Abide by and enforce all organizational policies and procedures.
  • May be required to lead or participate in product improvement projects
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Project, Word and other software such as AutoCAD, Ansys, NASTRAN, STADD, SACS etc.
  • Creation of all structural and resilient mounting for machinery foundations.
  • Responsible for incorporating manufacturing constraints.
  • Investigate new methods and design concepts by researching components or systems and evaluating applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IACS Class rules, IMO, MODU, Flag State and USCG regulations and their interpretation as applicable to all projects.
  • Work in conjunction with the Project Engineer (primary contact) for all classification documents and submittals.
  • Good working knowledge of Industry trends and design requirements as they relate to this discipline.
  • Select and design the best technical solution relevant to offshore platforms.
  • Platform design to be carried out.
  • Coordinate design activities and technical support during execution phases.
  • Define tender documentation and carry out technical evaluation of tenders.
  • Act as the Technical Authority and, if needed, the Technical Coordinator as far as structural aspects are concerned.
  • Ensure interface between different Contractors and Certifying Authority.
  • Liaises with project management team to identify the motives for any given work request, ensuring the scope of work agreed is suitable and the task is completed within the agreed time frame.
  • Excellent ability to work in a “team” environment and share knowledge of discipline specific work in both a vertical (up and down the org chart) and horizontal (across disciplines and departments) orientation.
  • Ability to make well-formed, rational decisions and demonstrate problem-solving skill within organizational policies and procedures.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and written skills.

Exercise administrative judgment on a regular and continuous basis and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences and results having an impact on people and quality of service within the department.

Possess the ability to communicate verbally and in writing positively and effectively with employees, co-workers, suppliers and vendors.

  • Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Naval Architecture with M Tech in Structural Engineering.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in structural analysis or design. Preferably in offshore, shipbuilding, or marine industry.
  • Project Management and/or team environment experience
  • Experience in design in Marine/Offshore Industry is preferred
  • Shipyard new construction, repair and refit experience preferred
  • Marine structure and outfitting thorough working knowledge
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Project, Word and other software such as AutoCAD, Ansys, NASTRAN, STADD, SACS etc.
