Panama Canal Increases Transit Slots: Impact on Global Shipping

Panama Canal Increases Transit Slots: Impact on Global Shipping

The Panama Canal Authority recently announced an increase in daily transit slots from 34 to 36, from September 2024. This decision follows early seasonal rains that have alleviated the drought conditions that were affecting operations. While the canal’s capacity still falls short of the previous full capacity of 38 to 40 slots, this adjustment is expected to reduce congestion and improve schedule reliability for global maritime trade.

Historically, the Panama Canal could accommodate up to 40 transit slots per day, but recent droughts reduced this capacity, causing delays of up to 21 days for some vessels. The increase in transit slots aims to clear the backlog of ships waiting to transit, making shipping routes more efficient. This improvement will likely result in more predictable schedules and potentially lower costs for shipping companies by reducing waiting times and optimizing fuel usage.
