New IMO model course to focus on safety of solid bulk cargoes

IMO's Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers is meeting for its sixth session this week (CCC 6), on 9-13 September, where it is expected to validate a new IMO Model Course on Safe Handling and Transport of Solid Bulk Cargoes. The IMO model course seeks to facilitate access to knowledge and skills regarding the carriage of bulk cargoes.

Checklist for compliance with the 2020 sulphur cap

From 1 January 2020, the limit for sulphur in fuel oil on board ships operating outside designated Emission Control Areas (ECAs) will fall to 0.50% mass by mass (m/m). BWM Convention: Discharge standard D-2 in full force

Between 8 Sep 2019 and Sep 2024, the BWM Convention will reach the second phase of its implementation where all ships will have to conform to the D-2 standard. In other words, after 15 years, the Ballast Water Management Convention is coming into full effect from this September since all ships must be fitted with D-2-compliant ballast water treatment system by the next IOPP renewal survey but not later than 8 September 2024.

IMO 2020 and Tank Cleaning

With less than six months remaining for the global implementation of the unprecedented 2020 sulphur cap, ship operators tend to switch to alternative fuels, unless they have scrubbers installed. However, compliance is much more than simply switching to a low sulphur fuel. High sulphur fuel oil (HSFO), the fuel that was used so far but now will be inappropriate, is primarily based on residual fuel and these tend to adhere to the inside of fuel tanks and pipelines forming sludge. As such, a proper tank cleaning becomes necessary for adoption of the new fuels.
