Surveyor – GMCG East Africa

Position Title: Surveyor
Location: East Africa
Reporting to: HOD – Survey

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Vessel Inspections and Surveys:
    • Conduct inspections and surveys of ships under construction and vessels in service to ensure compliance with international and regional maritime regulations, including class society requirements.
    • Perform inspections for dry-dockings, modifications, conversions, repairs, and maintenance.
    • Verify the condition of vessels to assess compliance with safety, environmental, and technical standards.
    • Undertake vendor inspections, material identification, and statement-of-fact surveys as required.
  2. Survey Reports and Documentation:
    • Prepare detailed survey reports, inspection findings, and recommendations in line with industry standards and company requirements.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all surveys, inspections, and audits conducted.
    • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to management and clients.
  3. Compliance with Regulations:
    • Ensure vessels comply with relevant international conventions (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, ISPS Code) and industry-specific safety and operational standards.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental and sustainability regulations, including energy efficiency measures.
    • Monitor compliance with local regulatory authorities and liaise with government agencies as required.
  4. Safety and Environmental Management:
    • Support the implementation of safety management systems and assist in conducting safety audits, including emergency preparedness and response procedures.
    • Contribute to projects related to safety enhancements, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
    • Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection across all vessels under survey.
  5. Project Involvement:
    • Assist in the planning and execution of new vessel constructions, modifications, and conversions.
    • Collaborate with internal teams, classification societies, and stakeholders to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery.
    • Monitor and report on project progress, ensuring adherence to specifications and timelines.
  6. Training and Development:
    • Continuously update and improve knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and best practices.
    • Assist in the training and mentorship of junior surveyors and technical staff.
    • Provide technical support and guidance to other departments as required.
  7. Client Interaction:
    • Liaise with clients, including ship owners, operators, and contractors, to ensure their needs are met and expectations are exceeded.
    • Provide expert advice on technical, regulatory, and operational matters related to vessel surveys.
  8. Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement:
    • Participate in internal audits to assess the performance and quality of operations.
    • Identify areas for improvement in survey processes and contribute to the continuous enhancement of service quality.
    • Ensure that all survey activities align with the company’s quality management systems and ISO standards.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field. Postgraduate qualifications in maritime affairs or shipping management are a plus.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience in vessel surveying, shipbuilding, or ship management, with significant exposure to vessel inspections and surveys.
  • Strong knowledge of international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISPS Code) and classification society rules (e.g., ABS, DNV, LR).
  • Experience in conducting inspections for oil & gas projects, offshore units (MODUs), tankers, bulk carriers, and container vessels.
  • Experience with newbuild projects, dry-docking, technical audits, and modification/conversion projects.
  • Familiarity with safety management systems (ISM Code, ISPS Code), environmental management practices, and energy efficiency measures.
  • Proven track record of working with classification societies, ship owners, and technical managers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare detailed reports and technical documentation.
  • Experience with incident investigations and root cause analysis is desirable.
  • Certified lead auditor in ISO 9001:2008 or equivalent is preferred.
  • Membership in professional organizations such as the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) is an advantage.

Must have knowledge of the following:

  1. Class & Statutory (Periodical) survey requirements.
  2. ISM (DOC – SMC), ISPS, MLC audit requirements
  3. Towing survey and single direct voyage permissions.
