What is EEXI
The IMO adopted on 17 June 2021 new amendments to MARPOL Annex VI at MEPC 76. It introduced regulations 23 and 25 – the Energy Efficiency eXisting Ship Index(EEXI) and regulation 28 – the requirement to reduce Operational Carbon Intensity through the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).
Any vessel impacted by EEXI must demonstrate compliance by the next intermediate or renewal survey for the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate (IAPPC). For ships that are now entering service, compliance needs to be demonstrated before the initial survey for the International Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC) or after 1 January 2023.
When does it come into force?
EEXI enters into force on November 1st, 2022.
What next?
There are immediate implications for your fleet and we advise quick action. If you haven’t started already, your focus should be on completing your EEXI and improving calculations as soon as possible to stay compliant with the new standards of sustainability.
Only a few months are left to comply with EEXI and the process can be lengthy, involving multiple steps. Failure to comply may mean that your ships will be unable to trade internationally.
